Ryan Hay is a Grand Rapids–based artist whose creative work spans multiple disciplines, including abstract painting, music, and writing. His artistic practice reflects a deep interest in experimentation and collaboration, often blending visual art with sound and performance.
Hay first built his creative identity as a musician and writer before turning to painting. A serious car accident in 2012 forced him to pause those pursuits during a long recovery. During that time, his wife, visual artist Angelica Hay, encouraged him to explore painting as a new creative outlet. What began as an experiment quickly developed into a meaningful artistic practice. Hay has described this shift as a moment when he realized that “words were inadequate,” drawing him toward the immediacy and emotional expression that visual art offered.
A Multidisciplinary Creative Practice
Although painting became an important focus after his recovery, Hay’s work continues to reflect his background in music and writing. His abstract paintings often emphasize rhythm, movement, and layered textures, qualities that echo the structure of music and poetry.
In addition to his visual art, Hay collaborates with his wife Angelica in the electronic music project Pink Sky, an experimental duo that blends electronic music with visual elements and multimedia performance. The project explores themes of resilience, transformation, and shared creative exploration.
Building Community Through Art
Beyond his own artwork, Hay has been actively involved in fostering the creative community in Grand Rapids. He helped co-found Collective Artspace, a collaborative environment where artists could work together, exhibit their work, and support one another’s creative development.
This commitment to collaboration reflects an important aspect of Hay’s artistic philosophy: creativity thrives when artists share ideas and build community together.
Working with Grand River Giclée
Ryan Hay has also worked with Grand River Giclée to reproduce his artwork as high-quality prints. For one pop-up exhibition at Neighbor Gallery in Grand Rapids, Hay needed six prints produced on a tight timeline. Our team was able to complete the order in less than a day so the work could be ready in time for the show.
Professional reproduction allows artists like Hay to present their work in galleries while maintaining the color, detail, and texture of the original pieces.
Continuing the Creative Journey
Ryan Hay’s work demonstrates how artistic expression can evolve across disciplines. Whether through abstract painting, music, or collaborative creative projects, his work continues to explore new forms of storytelling and emotional expression.
Through experimentation and community involvement, Hay remains an active voice in the West Michigan creative scene, contributing both his own work and opportunities for other artists to connect and grow.
